Mmm Mmm Good!

Solids. Today. Mmm.

Yes, today was a big day. All week we've talked about it. Today we finally did it. We gave Peyton his first taste of solid food. As all you mom's out there already know, rice cereal isn't exactly a solid food, but it is the first step towards the solid variety.

Per the "first feeding" directions on the box, I mixed one part rice cereal with 3 parts breast milk. No amount of mixing would make it any more solid than what it was...breast milk with a little bit of rice cereal mixed into it. Still, it looked safe enough to give it a go.

Like all first time parents, we set the stage perfectly: Baby in his play chair (since we do not have a highchair, yet) with a bib and an appetite, and completely unaware of the significance of the event and totally unprepared for the new and surprising taste and consistency to be presented to him in a dramatic fashion; mom with the "first feeding" in a bowl mixed just right, spoon in hand and an obnoxious and goofy grin spread across her face, anxious with anticipation; dad also grinning, but less anxious, and with video camera at the ready.

The first bite (slurp, really) was priceless and just how I imagined it and caught on tape to enjoy for years to come, right? Wrong! Somehow we thought we were executing a perfect "first feeding" - which we were - and were thrilled to capture the surprise, the grimace, the tongue thrust and finally the pleased and interested expressions of our dear little Barracuda's first bites of cereal, on video camera. Sadly, the opening scene was only captured in our minds (some may say that this is perhaps how it should have been done in the first place). When the video camera did catch up we were performing the final scene and curtain call. Luckily, while the show must go on, it will not be completely forgotten!
