Major Moment

May 24, 2013 - As if the last day of preschool celebration wasn't enough excitement for one day, Peyton learned to ride a pedal bike, too!  After a couple of years on the balance bike for practice, Peyton took off in a matter of minutes riding down the street on his new pedal bike.  Just like that.  We happened upon a father and son a couple of weeks ago while riding our bikes to the park.  After some small talk, they offered us their son's old pedal bike.  We saved it for a week or so in the garage, not sure how to present the matter to Peyton.  When he asked to head out on a bike ride after his preschool celebration, he say it in the corner of the garage, so we showed the new bike to him, as a passing thought, as something to look forward to learning in the near future.  He started to react with tears and protest, but his curiosity and bravery got the best of him.  One moment he was just checking it out to see how it might feel.  The next moment he was riding it tentatively while Steve steadied from behind.  Then, literally, a few moments later he was off and riding down the street all by himself!  What a thrill and major accomplishment for our little dude!  He took right to it and hasn't looked back since.  After a couple of weeks we did opt to buy him a smaller used bike, one that he could get on and off all by himself.  It was the right decision because it opened the door to a whole new world of freedom, thrill and independence for Peyton (and us).  We have since taken up jogging for exercise (to keep up) and have enjoyed endless possibilities for bike riding adventures.  Peyton is one steady, confident and proud, pedal bike rider!

Go, Peyton, Go!
