For the second year in a row the highly anticipated act of pumpkin carving was far more exciting in theory and dialog than it was in reality. With my encouragement Peyton did help design his jack-o-lantern face. We just couldn't get him to partake in any of the carving steps. He wasn't interested in putting his hands into the pumpkin to help pull out the pulp, and watching Steve use the knife to carve out the cap caused him to worry. I find this ironic for two reasons. 1) My son loves to get dirty and has no qualms about rolling up his sleeves and dipping his hand in dirt and slippery, slimy mud. 2) He loves tools. Go figure!
Peyton did, however, enjoy coloring and decorating a picture of a pumpkin while Steve carved away in the kitchen. And he did want to sort the pumpkin seeds and was very enthusiastic about helping me roast them. There was also some talk of cooking his pumpkin to make a pumpkin pie. We'll save pumpkin pie baking for another day.
