Buckle Fracture

It's official.  Allie has done something that no one else in our family has done.  On Sunday morning, Allie fell from the piano bench and fractured her arm.

It wasn't a dramatic fall from a great height.  After analyzing it 1000 times in my head, I still don't even have a clear picture in my mind of what actually happened (even though we were all right there to witness the fall).  But, it was a fall and there were a few more tears than we've seen from her before.  Other than the tears, it wasn't even clear to us that she was actually hurt, at first.  Then, after her morning nap, she wailed from her crib because she was unable to push herself up to sitting.  Panicked, we ran in to get her.  Confident and petrified at the same time, that she had a major injury.  Once upright, she appeared fine, again.  Happy and tear-free, she moved both arms freely about.  There wasn't any visible swelling or bruising.  Our day progressed as such; guessing and second guessing about what, if anything, was actually injured.  She would walk and run, move and play seemingly without pain.  Then, every time she lost her balance and fell, she would roll to her tummy and then lie there, immobile, and cry until someone picked her up and put her back on her feet.  As we watched this throughout the day, it became clear.  Allie wasn't pushing up or bearing weight on her left arm.

First thing Monday morning we took her to the doctor, received a referral to the radiologist, waited an eternity to get her in to get the actually X-ray taken, and learned the truth.  Allie has a buckle fracture in her left radius and another possible fracture in the ulna.  This necessitated another visit back to the doctor for a splint, which she sported for a couple of days (before she wriggled her way free).  Yesterday we just had to hang out and wait patiently.  Finally, after this mornings visit to the orthopedics office, Allison is now in something a bit more permanent, at least for a few weeks.  She is wearing a full arm cast until the bones heal.

She's been in surprising spirits and was complimented and commended time and again for how easy going she was throughout the whole ordeal.  Steve was with her during her appointments on Monday.  Today, she giggled and danced in my lap while the cast was being put on her arm.

It is with a heavy heart and much guilt that I add this memory to her baby book.  Although, it is definitely an event we won't soon forget.  So, there you have it.

We're hoping for a speedy recovery.

  2. I'm so sorry to hear about Allie's arm! I'm sure it was traumatic for all of you, but it'll pass quickly and she'll be as good as new before you know it. We're thinking of you, and get better soon Allie!
